Live-in or part-time: which actually suits your household

Live-in staff make sense for households with young children, elderly relatives, or unpredictable hours — but they need a private room and a clear day off, and both are non-negotiable. Part-time works better for smaller homes and fixed routines. Decide this before you interview; changing the arrangement afterwards is the most common reason a placement ends early.

Decide before you interview

The choice between live-in and part-time staff shapes everything else: who applies, what you pay, what your home needs to offer and what the working day looks like. It is also the single most common reason a placement ends early — a family hires part-time, discovers they need someone in the evenings, and tries to change the arrangement after the fact.

Work it out first, using the questions below.

When live-in makes sense

Live-in staff suit households where help is needed across the whole day, or at unpredictable times:

  • Young children, especially with early mornings or night feeds.
  • Elderly parents or a family member recovering from illness, where someone needs to be close at hand.
  • Both parents working long or irregular hours.
  • Large homes where the work genuinely fills a full day.

What live-in staff need from you

Two things are non-negotiable: a private room with a door that closes, and a clear, regular day off. Staff who have neither leave, and the good ones leave first.

Agree the working hours even for live-in roles. Living in the house does not mean being on call at every hour; set a start time, an end time and a rest period, and keep to them. Agree in advance how leave for Eid and family occasions will work.

When part-time works better

Part-time help suits smaller homes and fixed routines: a flat that needs cleaning three mornings a week, a cook who comes in for the evening meal, a driver for school runs. You keep your privacy, you need no spare room, and the work is clearly bounded.

The trade-off is flexibility. A part-time maid has other households too, so a sudden change of plan — guests arriving, a child off sick — is harder to cover.

A middle path

Some families combine the two: a live-in helper for childcare or elderly care, with a part-time cleaner for heavy work once or twice a week. Others hire a husband-and-wife couple, where one handles the house and the other drives or keeps the garden, sharing one set of quarters.

Whatever you choose, tell PMS at the start. We shortlist differently for live-in and part-time roles, because the people who want each are different people.
