Seven questions to ask before you hire a maid

Most bad placements are decided in the interview, not on the job. Ask why the last placement ended, who else lived in the house, what hours were actually worked versus agreed, and whether she is comfortable with pets, stairs and guests. Then call the previous household yourself — an agency that will not give you that number is telling you something.

What police verification actually covers — and what it does not

Police verification confirms identity against CNIC records and checks for a criminal record in the areas the applicant has lived. The first week with new staff sets the next two years

Write the routine down on day one — rooms, timings, what is off-limits, how you prefer to be told about problems. Show, do not just tell, for the first three days. Agree how pay and time off will work before the first month ends. Households that do this keep staff for years; households that improvise replace them in months.

A safe-hiring checklist you can print

Original CNIC seen and photocopied. Police verification submitted and receipt retained. Two previous households called, not messaged. Emergency contact recorded. Written agreement signed by both parties with duties, hours, pay date and notice period. Replacement policy in writing. If any line is missing, do not proceed — every one of them exists because someone skipped it.
